Behind the Scenes Inspiration for Every Breath

In less than a week, my new novel, Every Breath, will be on store shelves! Right now, I’d like to share with you a little behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration for this book, which came from two very separate places.

The first bit of inspiration was a familiar destination in my home state of North Carolina. There is a mailbox, well known to locals as “Kindred Spirit,” that sits out on a secluded stretch of coastline -- it’s a place where passersby fill a journal with their thoughts, fears, and dreams -- and while it has a rich history all its own, what has stayed with me all these years is the romantic notion of a lonely mailbox in the middle of nowhere filled with handwritten notes of love, loss, and hope.

I then came up with the character of Tru when I was traveling in Africa. I was so impressed with the welcoming people, the exotic landscape, and the natural beauty and wildlife that I wanted to find a way to include a character from Zimbabwe into one of my books. I just had to figure out how to get him to North Carolina…. You can see some of my personal photos above as well as a short video clip about my travels for more insight.

I hope you enjoy reading about Tru and Hope, two strangers whose paths cross unexpectedly, and whose chance encounter becomes a touchstone for two vastly different individuals -- transcending decades, continents, and the bittersweet workings of fate.

Sincerely yours,

P.S. As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, the Every Breath book tour will be kicking off on release day, October 16, with my first stop in New York City. As of the writing of this newsletter, all scheduled tour events across the US remain on the calendar. Please continue to check this website for tour details. I look forward to seeing you on the road.

Book Tour News!

The release of my next book, Every Breath, comes the chance to visit with many of you during my book tour. I’m excited to share the US tour dates and locations that have just been finalized. Visit my website for the full list of book tour details. Please note that some of the events are ticketed due to limited space and they may sell out, so I encourage you to buy tickets early. I hope I get to meet you somewhere along the way.

If you haven’t heard yet, Two by Two is now available in paperback. Readers that pick up a copy of this latest edition are able to get a first look preview of Every Breath, but as a thank you for subscribing to my mailing list, here is a link to the excerpt of my new book and special author's note just for you. Let me know what you think of it on FacebookTwitter and Instagram by posting about it using #everybreath. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading about these new characters as much as I enjoyed writing about them.

In the meantime, I’m humbled to have one of my most popular novels, The Notebook, included in PBS’ “The Great American Read”. A new eight-part television competition and nationwide campaign, the program explores the power of books and the joy of reading through the lens of America’s 100 best-loved novels. As an avid reader myself, it is wonderful to see so many novels that I have personally enjoyed put together in one place. Watch celebrity interviews online and vote for your best-loved book before the series returns this fall at pbs.org.

Last but not least, thank you for your continued support. I look forward to sharing more news about my upcoming novel, Every Breath, with you shortly … stay tuned!

Sincerely yours,

Summer Greetings 2017

My Dear Friend,

Summer is underway, and I’m excited to be able to share the news with you that my most recent bestselling novel, Two By Two, is now available in paperback. If you haven’t had a chance to read the book yet, I hope this new edition makes it easier for you to do so and that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

As for what I’ve been up to lately, it’s been a busy travel time for me. I’ve been touring and visiting readers from Argentina to Brazil, and I’m currently making plans for my European book tour this October. Wherever I go, I’m reminded how lucky I am to have such wonderful fans and I’m grateful for all of your love and support.

In addition to the privilege of meeting new people during my travels, I also get to indulge in one of my favorite pastimes: reading! As a fellow book lover, I want to share some of the titles of my favorite recently read books. There is a short list of some of my favorite recently read books on my website and you can also look for my ongoing Nicholas Recommends list on Goodreads for more recommendations.

In related summer news, one of my bestselling novels, The Guardian, has recently gotten a special audiobook treatment that just might be perfect for a long road trip. This special edition “Booktrack” pairs traditional audiobook narration with a contemporary music soundtrack throughout. It’s a completely new experience and I’m curious to know what you think about it so if you have a moment, listen to the sample clip and let me know what you think of it on Facebook or Twitter.

I’m also excited to announce that the paperback edition of Two by Two at Walmart and Sam’s Club includes a free audiobook download! All copies are stickered with the details on how you can get your choice of a free Nicholas Sparks audiobook.

Last but not least, you may be wondering about my next novel. While we don’t have a title yet, I can tell you that the story is well underway and is shaping up beautifully. I promise that when I’m able to share more information on the book, I’ll send out an email so that you are among the first to hear about it!

Best wishes for the rest of your summer and may it be filled with wonderful books.

Sincerely yours,

Nicholas’ Recommended Reads

Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock
This isn't a novel; in fact, it's a book that can probably be read by most people in less than an hour.  It is more of an artistic expression of both love and desire in written form, as explored via a mysterious correspondence, in which the reader can participate.

Silk by Alessandro Baricco
This is another form of love story, one written in almost poetic form.  It was a major world-wide bestseller years ago -- millions of copies -- and if you haven't had the chance to read it, you should do yourself a favor.  It's short and poignant and beautiful, in every way.

To Dance with the White Dog by Terry Kay
Quite simply, this is one of my favorite novels of all time, and one that I've reread at least a dozen times.  It tells the story of an elderly widower, who's befriended by a dog that no one else ever sees, a dog that helps him through his loneliness.  Warm and touching, it's a novel that people of all ages can enjoy.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
This novel, set in Sweden, tells the story of Ove, who can best be described as a curmudgeon. The story takes place after the death of his wife, and shows how healing can occur with the unlikeliest of people, in the unlikeliest of ways.
