Debut Novels I’m Excited to Read

While I love summer in North Carolina, I always look forward to fall, and not just for the apple cider and change of season. It’s also for the new books: I’m always excited to find fantastic books by talented debut authors. Here are three debuts that I’m still looking forward to checking out, when time allows!

• We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas

This debut follows Eileen Leary, born in Queens to Irish immigrants in 1941, as she strives for betterment and a shot at the great American dream. The author himself was born in the Bronx and grew up in Queens.

• Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little

Released on a technicality after spending 10 years in prison for killing her socialite mother, Janie Jenkins makes it her mission to find the real murderer. Elizabeth Little has written several works of nonfiction before writing this debut.

• Bird Box by Josh Malerman

This debut novel is being compared to the work of Stephen King—one of my favorite writers—and follows the descent of a Michigan town besieged by creatures that cause anyone who sees them to lose their mind.
